Vietnam. In 1997 I received a travelling Scholarship from Glasgow City Council and went to Vietnam. I travelled from Hanoi to Halong Bay, Hoi An, Halong Bay and Danang. I had wanted to see the only water puppet group of its kind, Thang Long, and some of these sketches below were from their performance. The people were so friendly, the food was exciting, I loved my trip.

Nigeria. In 1990, after graduating from Art School, I went to Nigeria. I visited an all night drumming festival in Ife, went to a gorgeous beach in Lagos and went to West Africa’s largest market in Kano. The Benin sculptures and the sculpture park at Ife were incredible.

Nepal. In 1989, before my 4th year at Art School, I went street drawing in town centres across Scotland to make money for my first adventurous travel abroad. I went to Nepal. It was an overwhelming experience as a 21 year old, but incredible. Many people helped to make my journey a success, which couldn’t have been easy as a naive single student! I stayed in Biratnager and drew the patients coming into a leprosy clinic, and loved sitting on the temples in Katmandhu drawing the life around.
